Default some ?'s and discussion about salvaging

so, this guy's thread about making money reminded of a couple things I wanted to ask about salvaging, as I see a lot of people are pretty high on.

bear in mind that I'm currently 15th lvl on my first character and have just reached kryta.
also, my questions exclude the salvaging of material for my own armor (warrior), as even I can figure that much out, and I'm an idiot.

as far as MATERIALS go, regular and expert salvage the same amount, w/the difference being you might occasionally get steel instead of iron (or whatever) w/the expert, right?
now, each salvage costs me either 4 or 16 gold, and I lose an item that I could sell for 10-30 gold.
depending on the item, and if I use the expert kit to try for the rare material, it seems to me that I'd need to get back maybe 3-6 common crafting materials to make this pay, and right now that's pretty unlikely.
I've read threads of people getting 8+ and I was just wondering if there was some way to tell if an item will yield 8 instead of 1, and at what point can I expect this.
right now, getting 1 or 2 materials back doesn't seem like a winning proposition.

also, as far as getting the mods, etc, off weapons and armor, I understand that I have to use an expert, and that sometimes it'll just yield materials.
but, sometimes it will just tell me that 'this item cannot be salvaged' when I try it on a magic weapon.
is there any pattern to which I can actually salvage, and is the particular mod you get just random chance when there's a couple on there?
do you think that when I use the expert kit on more advanced weapons my material return will be greater than a regular kit, in the event I don't get any mod?
because if I think I can just get steel from a purple sword, let's say, that seems like a better deal than some low end mod.

thx

ps

I guess I should also ask if there are any uses for all this crap other than crafting your own armor (warrior, in my case --- just recently got yak's glads)

As why you can't "salvage" some items, they are either collector's things/quest rewards <unsalvagable sometimes>

As for telling what will yield what, it's all about where you are. Ascalon/Shiverpeaks north/Krtya yield low return rates, so I tend to only salvage mods here.

As for matierials, anywhere desert+southern shiverpeaks and beyond salvage for 5+ everytime with an expert in my experience. No other use for crafting besides armor for yourself/later in the game. People stock them simply to sell to merchants/other players.

Mods on the other hand you can make some nice money if you get nice mods.
